On Monday 10 October 2022, a physical SophiA meeting took place between the teams of HKA, SPF-OST and Operieren in Afrika.
The Director of Léo hospital, Omar Ouedraogo, and one surgeon of the hospital of Operieren in Afrika, Clarisse Judith, travelled from Burkina Faso for this purpose. Additionally, the German technician of the NGO, Horst Ritschel, joined the visit. The laboratory water prototype for clean drinking water as well as for deionized water for medical applications was presented by Sneha De, Duc Dinh Ngoc and Prof. Jan Hoinkis. Oliver Schmid and Prof. Michael Kauffeld presented the refrigeration lab prototype that will provide cooling of medicines at -70°C, -30 °C and +5°C. The connection to the solar system – PV and solar thermal, as well as the overall control system for both laboratory scale prototypes, including failure detection system, were discussed with SPF-OST experts Lukas Omlin and Daniel Zenhäusern.
Moreover, technical aspects regarding the installation of the first containerised SophiA system solutions were discussed with experts from the Dr. Sedogo Hospital in Léo, Burkina Faso. The SophiA systems will be demonstrated at four health facilities in different geographical regions in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi and Uganda where aid is most needed, providing sustainable solutions adapted to the African context.
