Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) is a state-owned institution of higher education. The University is very active in the area of applied research. The Institute of Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning and Environmental Engineering (IKKU) manages the SophiA project. It has a staff of 9 Professors and approximately 40 scientists and engineers. In addition, HKA/IKKU develops the refrigeration and water treatment systems for SophiA systems.

Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) has a strong applied research activity, distributed over 18 research institutes. The Institute for Solar Technology (SPF) conducts research and development of innovative energy technologies and includes an accredited Testingcenter with a focus on solar thermal and photovoltaic applications.
