The SophiA project has reached a significant milestone with the preparation of the arrival of its advanced refrigeration technologies at Mua Mission Hospital (MMH) in Malawi.
This collaboration is an important step in SophiA’s mission to improve healthcare through sustainable, energy-efficient solutions. Mua Mission Hospital, established in 1911, is a non-profit health facility that provides essential medical services in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM).
Oliver Schmid from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA), together with Nicholas Kiggundu from Makerere University, recently visited Mua Mission to assess the site for the installation of a SophiA container. Their visit involved measuring cable lengths and identifying optimal water connection points. The installation of this system will be essential for storing vaccines, medications, and other temperature-sensitive medical supplies, greatly enhancing the hospital’s healthcare capabilities.
This initiative has been made possible through the support of the M.C. Foundation, led by Miss Cäcilia, who actively finances Mua Mission Hospital and organizes surgeons and medical equipment to expand the hospital’s capacities. During the visit, Oliver met with Cäcilia, who expressed enthusiasm for further collaboration with SophiA to support the hospital’s growth and improve healthcare delivery in Malawi.

The SophiA team also visited an outreach site where a solar-powered PV MedPort will soon be installed. This unit will provide essential refrigeration for medical supplies in off-grid locations, extending healthcare services to remote communities.
